AMENITIES & SERVICES
What to expect: Water, water everywhere—a tropical lagoon, koi ponds, swimming pools, waterfalls, canals, and spas. This self-contained vacation village (population 3,000), is crisscrossed by flagstone paths with numerous bridges spanning lots of water. Lush grounds encompass both an outdoor museum and a botanical garden, with self-guided art tours. Amenity highlights: A huge natural lagoon contains bottlenose dolphins where guests—even children—are welcome to interact with the mammals through the Dolphin Quest program. The resort's ocean beach is rocky so the Village provides an alternative in the form of a four-acre saltwater lagoon with its own sand beach and waterfalls. Open to the sea, the lagoon permits fish and turtles to come and go, and provides excellent flat-water snorkeling. Two major freshwater pool complexes include water slides and a third pool is adults-only. It's surrounded by padded lounge chairs and silence. Insider tip: At Waikoloa Beach Resort's upscale shopping/dining center, Kings' Shops (a 5-minute drive from the Village), a telescope is located in a gazebo above a lake bordering the center and offers a view of Mauna Kea's summit, where the world's largest telescope can be seen.

The Red Sail Sports desk arranges snorkeling, whale-watching, and sunset cruises aboard a 50-foot catamaran and scuba-diving excursions aboard a 38-foot motor boat.
